The Story
(a very condensed version)

In the beginning, Oliver isn’t ready for death.

At age fourteen he is anxious about it as he stands before the blazing crimson hot coals about to walk on fire.

The experience is a revelation - it releases Oliver from his fears and gives him a powerful sense of control. The future is glowing, the world is a beautiful place and there are truths to behold.

But when Oliver starts college, he gets mixed up with the wrong crowd with easy access to drugs and alcohol. He doesn’t know he has slipped into circumstances he doesn’t belong. His best friend, the leader of the crowd, dies suddenly.

It is a shocking reality for Oliver he cannot accept. His heart splits asunder and he plummets into depression. He is suffocated by fear, loss and grief.

Oliver buries his pain and rage under an emotional mask he has clasped over his heart and mind. He disconnects from his friends and loved one’s – and himself - causing events to spiral out of control.

One fateful afternoon rips Oliver from all he knows. His relationship suffers most. Oliver and his girlfriend become trapped in a cycle of conflict without atonement until shattering is inevitable.

Oliver sees only one choice, to escape. He gets a one-way ticket overseas and with no money and no means to get back home, it’s a desperate move.

The cycle of depression, anger and fear must be broken. While overseas is a welcome change, it is not all easy: Oliver is now alone. He suffers through isolation and regret and is deeply ashamed of his actions. He is haunted by grief. Oliver must learn to stand on his own.

His determination for recovery and renewal inspire openings to enriching and different experiences, influences and people. He is confronted by a deep-seated phobia, demanding Oliver find the courage to stop running and face up to his fears – and himself.

The break from his past works - or so he thinks. Oliver discovers humility, compassion, and a quick smile. Depression has passed, his grieving abated, and his anger is replaced by a passion for life. He begins the journey home, but must overcome a twist that threatens his safe return.

Back home riding the wave of change, back among friends and family, Oliver’s depression and grief seem long since forgotten. Oliver befriends a well-traveled, lighthearted and humorous individual, and the unlikely pair make an unexpected investment in the future.

Life hasn’t shone like this for many years.

Tragically, his best mate is diagnosed with a shocking illness. Oliver is overcome with being a carer as he struggles with the devastating and heartbreaking truth of his friend being ripped apart from the inside. His perception of beauty fails, his demons return.

Oliver is challenged to the core to find even deeper courage, humility, and compassion - and not completely succumb once again to fear and pain. He must not run and abandon his best mate and destroy the friendship, as they are taken to the edge of death.

Can Oliver overcome his grief and fears of those closest to him dying? Will he find the fortitude to find truth and beauty in a world seemingly filled with pain and suffering?

Will Oliver’s young heart be ready for death – is he ready for life?

A Brief Message From The Author

Hello Dear Reader Friend,

I recently saw an online conversation spark up about readers who leap over chunks of the work, sometimes even read the last pages first to find out how it ends… Something about being able to relax, something about not being able to enjoy the read if they don't...

WHAAAAAT??!! People do this? Oh, how could you.

The slap of this monstrous imprudence. As a first time published author to learn this happens, and happens a lot, was as horrifying an affront as I could fathom. You, you....MONSTERS!

Or then again, maybe there was something significant at play, something worth learning, something far more important?

The work after all, all of it... The thousands of hours as it was in my case and others like me who don't find that mercurial place where paragraphs turn into long sections and chapters pour out; the wrestle to reach that exact word; the years of writer's block (yes, years, not a drop); the arguments with myself about the plot; the lost ideas that slipped before landing - but I knew they had called - the frustrated attempts to share with friends who couldn't possibly figure my incoherence, the words sticking in my throat; the uncertainty of the placement of a stop, the snaffoo over the naming of the serial comma; the actual real mistakes; the utter ecstatic joyful abandonment and promise of maybe putting something of beauty out into the world - it was all for the reader.

Make no mistake, So It Begins is about how the hero of our journey reacts to some gut wrenching and consuming loss.

The story deals with death. It deals with cancer, too. Both, head on and soul-deep. I don't take that lightly. I don't think we should be casual with the truth.

But it turns out many people do not want to go rummaging around in their darker inner workings without knowing how the story ends. Many do not want to delve into their psyche because they think there is a chance it will lead them to happiness. That ain't fun for some. Some want to actually know beforehand how the story ends.

After all, once the work is complete it becomes the gift - and hopefully a good one. But it belongs to the reader. It belongs to you, my dear reader friend. To start wherever, to pause, to put it down for another time, to stop, to throw it on the ground, to love it hate it or to live through every word page after page just as I'd intended and dreamed. Or, well, not.

Ahhh, the sweet diabolical beauty of the reader's choice.

Blessings for your journey!

Bradley

So It Begins Over the Years
1992
The Beginning

A single spark of  inspiration ignites a flame in my heart to write a novel.

An idea about a choice takes flight & triggers the sharing of a true story.

So It Begins lands.

But hang on - I can't write!

2005
Epiphany

After 12 years of sporadic writing, the complete plot lands in a flash. Seeing the 'whole' story for the 1st time, the real meaning behind my story is a lightning bolt of clarity.

"Ohh, THAT'S what this story is really about!"

1992
Day One

The original logline lands on the 1st day of writing when describing the vision to a best mate while ironing a shirt.

Back then it was...

'If there was a world

filled with honesty and beauty, would you

choose to live in it?'

2006
Clarity

The clarity fuels unprecedented momentum. The story is effectively finished... But years of perpetual editing follow.

The logline is updated to...

'...truth and beauty...'

1992-3
Humble Beginnings

The 1st chapter is written by hand. A best mate transcribes it on his Mum's typewriter. No reason - just because.

Mum & Dad hear about it

& give me their typewriter.

Later they find a 2nd-hand laptop weighing 3.5kg, which they give to me & take back the typewriter.

Easter Rise

Easter Sunday.

My wife and I walk up a hill behind our home, and come down a mountain...

A line in the sand is drawn.

I order a hard back version of So It Begins "for one last edit".

1998
Blackout

4 years of writer's block.

Blank. Nothing.

Not a clear thought.

Not a new idea.

I'm wondering if this is

what the end looks like.

The End...

The manuscript is sent

to the (last) editor. She emerges with,

"What a ride!"
